As it's "Book Lovers Day", you might want to check out some book-related server types on the Fediverse:

@inventaire is a book cataloguing platform which lets people and organisations keep track of their own collection or run a private lending library. You can follow many different parts of Inventaire from Mastodon etc, including users, authors, series, publishers and more. The official site is at inventaire.io

@bookwyrm is a federated open alternative to Amazon's GoodReads, and you can import your GoodReads data into BookWyrm. It's part of the Fediverse and you can follow BookWyrm users from Mastodon etc. You can find out more including servers to sign up on at joinbookwyrm.com

Purslane is an innocuous ground-hugging plant that is able to thrive in disturbed, bone-dry, barren scraps of soil where other plants struggle. I've seen it and thought, "wow! How are you alive?" New research shows that it's capable of combining aspects of C4 and more drought-tolerant CAM photosynthesis in a combined process that was not thought to be biologically possible! It gets the productivity benefits of C4 and the water saving benefits of CAM in one package!

"There's a coyote on the train with us."

I ignored this comment, as I ignored many comments I overheard in public.

Then I realized I was alone.
I looked around to find the mysterious passenger who'd spoken, but I only saw the coyote.

"Was that you announcing yourself," I asked with a tired laugh. I'd been working overtime for no pay.

The canine stared at the 'empty' spot beside me, cowering.

We both scurried off two stations early.

People who are proudly using #TikTok and disregard all privacy issues as ‘that’s normal’ as really just people who don’t have the slightest clue about how software works.

Parents who give their child a phone or tablet with such apps are even worse.

It’s very sad to see how easily people give up all their data and privacy for some entertainment wow.

TikTok is toxic shit and I’m not talking about the community alone.

Assuming the subset of people I follow and interact with on social media are representative of the general population, about 90 percent of people in the world are trans! Can this be right?

If you have VHS tapes sitting around with recorded TV shows from channels that had Teletext, there's a good chance that you have Teletext signals stored along with the show! Video recorders used to just dump the entire broadcast signal into tape, including the invisible part.

You can get to this data with these tools: github.com/ali1234/vhs-teletex

An abundance of squash flowers in the garden meant we got to enjoy them battered and fried yesterday 😋

The batter was simply an egg, some flour and a generous splash of beer.

How do you eat yours (if you do)?

I think it's better to separate archive and announcements into separate servers. The archive is a solved problem, right now any general purpose https or gemini server can already do that as long as you upload files with correct links between them.

On the other hand it is important for the present to announce new data becoming available (such as using RSS or activitypub). Perhaps a static page generator can create metadata files to tell a server what to announce and how? Hmmm...

A future proof content management system would either have plugins for server protocols (https and would be right today), or plugins to output sets of static files in multiple formats to be hosted on whatever current and future technology. The latter would be simpler and safer - because we can't 100% expect the future to have something like internet.

Do you know the type of thoughts that used to lead to a quick web search but you don't bother anymore because you don't expect an answer even when it probably is out there? I'll try...
