vent, language, uni

I'm really getting sick of doing well in assessments and exams and then losing 10-20 marks because the uni decided they want to scale it.

How the fuck do they think this is encouraging us to give a shit? So far a solid third of the modules that actually count to my degree have been straight up fudged by scaling...

(Some stuff is evil though: don't violate human rights, dammit)

In short: we have enough *genuine bad intentions* in the tech industry as it is to be adding more that probably aren't actually intentionally nefarious...

Just call out the issues, don't act like it's all intentional, and if it gets fixed? Great! It maybe wasn't intentional.

If you go in with a "this is evil" mentality, everyone is damned if you do, damned if you don't. It's toxic.

don't get me wrong: it *is* a flaw when something performs better on a benchmark than actual usage. Sometimes, that's a flaw of the benchmark (they're supposed to simulate actual usage), other times it's a flaw of effectively developing *for* the benchmark - that's not great, and should be brought up as a mistake, at least.

But categorising it as "cheating", etc? Nah - they're probably mistakes similar to overtraining an AI, tbh.

Would love for tech YouTubers to stop characterising everything as a malevolent decision *explicitly designed* to be that way.

Like, they keep getting at tech stuff being "suspiciously good" at standard benchmarks, but that's the point of benchmarks: to test products, especially during development.

Warning: There’s an app for blurring out sensitive information in images called Obfuscate being featured on #GNOME Software right now.

Please be careful.

The default blur setting can easily be reversed.

The default should be to replace the areas with a solid colour or a pattern not derived from the underlying information.

This really should not be a featured app in its current state.

lmfao Bungie can't manage a *single* release anymore without it leaking.

... I've since been informed this *may* be an autistic thing.

That keeps happening a lot lately 😅

"Dear Professor Chomsky,

We are a group of Ukrainian academic economists who were grieved by a series of your recent interviews and commentaries on the Russian war on Ukraine. We believe that your public opinion on this matter is counter-productive to bringing an end to the unjustified Russian invasion of Ukraine and all the deaths and suffering it has brought into our home country."

also shoutout to like, 2 days ago when I found out my employer has a memes channel on Slack...

and promptly got called out in a meme for "fearlessly shilling rust / to everyone who didn't ask". alas.

annual request for someone to turn the bloody sun off.

please.

Like what do you *mean* I can't talk through this complicated structure aloud?

I've gotta use a piece of paper?!

I miss remote exams.

Most stressful part of programming exams is definitely not being able to talk to myself or, ya know, openly appreciate a particularly *nice* function.

Kalush Orchestra, the winners of #Eurovision 2022 published the official video for the song "Stefania", which was filmed in #Ukrainian cities affected by #Russian occupiers.

Eurovision, Ukraine

Happy for Ukraine. Their song slapped and their outfits were cool.

I hope Putin is pissed off. I hope all the crank conspiracy theorists backing Russia are pissed off too.

We stand together.

happy with that result. 💙💛

even if France was bloody robbed.
