Some of you may have noticed from around the start of June that some of your followers have disappeared.

Long story short, I fucked up and that's on me. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. There's a technical reason behind it to do with users from other instances eating up disk space with their avatars/headers and Mastodon caches them forever.

By the time I realized it didn't make sense to restore the database from a backup because weeks had past.

I didn't want to screw over new users who had signed up and I didn't want to screw over everyone who had posted in the weeks since.

So the question is, where from here? Well, if you're not affected or don't particularly care then continue as normal! However, if you have noticed some followers are missing and you wish to ask them to refollow, I can dig those out from a database backup. Note this is a manual process and it may take a while but I'm happy to show I take this seriously.

Again, this is my fuck up. I didn't do enough testing and some relations were deleted unintentionally. The whole reason I did this in the first place was to reduce the amount of disk space Mastodon was using as to keep it less expensive to run. We were very close to needing to upgrade to a more expensive monthly server plan and it just didn't make sense to do so.

I try my best but sometimes things go wrong. I blame myself a lot but hopefully nobody is affected by this too badly.

@nathan once I've migrated to my new user, can I delete the old one?(migration done, just making sure deleting the old account won't break things)
